asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will give details of the technical modifications to the special temporary employment programme outside the new special temporary employment programme areas which he has made to ensure an orderly rundown of the programme; and if, in particular, he will list the effect on individual projects, giving the location, numbers of people involved and the cash arrangements.

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that in areas of the country where new STEP schemes may no longer be mounted exist- ing schemes can continue to the end of their agreed period of funding. Where the circumstances justify, extensions of schemes of up to 12 weeks are being granted. I regret that the information about individual schemes could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
