HC Deb 20 December 1979 vol 976 cc301-2W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the savings which he expects to make from computerisation.

Mr. Mayhew

[pursuant to his reply, 13 December 1979, c. 742]: Progressive savings have resulted from the use of computers in my Department since they were first introduced in 1960. These savings are being extended from time to time when adding new items of work to established systems.

The recent development of new computer systems for small firms employment subsidy and job release scheme payments are now producing savings around £72,000 and £400,000 per annum respectively.
