HL Deb 18 December 1979 vol 403 c1651WA
Lord WINDLESHAM

asked Her Majesty's Government:

To what extent British technology and manufacturing capacity has been and is being utilised in the various projects of the European Space Agency.

Viscount TRENCHARD

British technology and manufacturing capacity in the aerospace, electronics, telecommunications, scientific and power systems fields have been utilised in all the European Space Agency programmes, in particular in the telecommunication programme (the European Communication satellites and the Maritime satellites), in the meteorological satellite and in the various scientific satellites. A British company has been selected as the prime contractor for the definition stage of the Large Satellite (L-Sat).

Since 1972 the total amount of all ESA contracts has been 1,983.7 million accounting units (MAUs) or approximately £1,290 million (at 0.65 pounds to 1 AU). The United Kingdom industries' share of these has been 277.8 MAU or approximately £180.5 million or 14 per cent.
