HC Deb 17 December 1979 vol 976 c17W
Mr. Thornton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many schoolteachers were employed at the beginning of the current school year.

Dr. Boyson

In September 1979, the number of teachers employed in maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools in England and Wales, including the full-time equivalent of part-time teachers, was 468,000. This compares with 467,900 teachers in September 1978 and with 470,600 in January 1979.
