HC Deb 17 December 1979 vol 976 c1W
Mr. Lee

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food why farmers are not being permitted to market potatoes below 3½in wide and 6½in long; and if he will review this policy.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

This is a matter for the Potato Marketing Board, which prescribes, with certain limited exempttions, the minimum standard of grading for ware potatoes sold by registered producers for human consumption in Great Britain. For the current crop, the ware standard specifies minimum and maximum riddle sizes of 40 and 80 millimetres respectively, and a maximum length of 165 millimetres within a 5 per cent. maximum tolerance for both size and other defects in any package or container.
