HC Deb 17 December 1979 vol 976 c56W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how much will be saved in manpower and costs by the conversion of the National Maritime Institute into a non-governmental research association.

Mr. David Mitchell

[pursuant to his reply,13 December 1979]: The conversion of the National Maritime Institute into a non-governmental research association or other industrial research laboratory will save 300 staff. Cost saving is intended to come from an increase in external contract work. In 1978–79 such work brought an income of£1.3 million out of total expenditure of£4.2 million.
