HC Deb 17 December 1979 vol 976 c18W
Sir John Langford-Holt

asked the Lord Privy Seal how many British citizens are at present in Iran; how this figure compares with the same time in 1978, and what advice about their remaining in that country has been given to them.

Mr. Ridley

There are at present between 300 and 400 British citizens in Iran. At this time in 1978 they numbered about 8,000.

It is up to individuals and their companies to decide, in the light of their own judgment of their business commitments and the security situation, whether to leave or not. Her Majesty's ambassador has advised that those who do not have a strong need to be in Iran should leave.
