HC Deb 17 December 1979 vol 976 c13W
Mr. R. C. Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what are the duties of Her Majesty's inspectors of education in collecting information on behalf of the Cabinet Office; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mark Carlisle

The chief function of Her Majesty's inspectors of schools is not to collect information but to report to me, and to advise me, from evidence observed and assessed in the course of inspections, on the state of the education system nationally. In common with all civil servants they respond from time to time to requests made by the Cabinet Office which relate to the inspectorate's functions.
