HL Deb 17 December 1979 vol 403 cc1520-1WA
Baroness HORNSBY-SMITH

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will consider the limited grants given to the south-west inshore fishermen in comparison with the very substantial grants made to Northern and Scottish trawlers now taking, the major part of the catch in the South-West and selling direct to factory ships.

Earl FERRERS

The system of Exchequer grants for the improvement and construction of fishing vessels administered by the White Fish Authority does not discriminate against inshore vessels. Improvement grants are available, at the same rate, for both large and small vessels. Grants for new construction are at present directed primarily towards vessels of less than 80 feet in length.
