HC Deb 07 December 1979 vol 975 cc410-1W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he is satisfied with the current level of imports of steel and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Parkinson

In 1977 and 1978 the United Kingdom was a net exporter of steel: we hope that in 1979 a favourable balance will again be achieved. As I made clear in my reply to my hon. Friend on 5 July, we hope that in this as in other industrial sectors there will be both growth in exports and progressive displacement of imports by an increasing supply of competitive products from the domestic industry.
