Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Trade whether he will circulate in the Official Report a table comparing the United Kingdom surplus in terms of dollars on trade in motor vehicles in each year since 1952 with the corresponding surplus in Germany, France, Italy and Japan, together with figures of the terms of trade for engineering products generally, based on 1970, and the terms of trade for iron and steel products.

Figures of trade in machinery* are:

Approximate estimates for the second quarter of 1979–the latest period for which sales data are available—suggest that exports of machinery were about one-half, and imports of machinery about one-third, by value, of United Kingdom manufacturers: sales of machinery to the home market. Comprehensive figures of external trade/home sales ratios for rolling 12-month periods are available in the quarterly "Business Monitor" MQ12.
