Mr. Joseph Dean

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will publish in theOfficial Report a detailed breakdown of the expenditure involved in compiling the report of inquiry into the prison services.

Mr. Brittan: The information requested is as follows:

Travelling and subsistence etc, costs	41,113.08
Estimated cost of production of Government evidence	5,995.16
Estimated cost of printing and publication	23,100.00
	228,933.74

The figures for staff costs includes the cost of the full-time services of the chairman of the committee of inquiry, Mr. Justice May, and Sheriff C. G. B. Nicholson as well as that of the members of the committee's secretariat.
