Mr. Corrie

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many legal abortions under the Abortion Act 1967 were carried out in Wythenshawe hospital, Manchester (a) in 1978 and (b) in the first three quarters of 1979;

(2) how many live births there were at Wythenshawe hospital, Manchester (a) in 1978 and (b) in the first three quarters of 1979.

A total of 191 abortions were carried out at Wythenshawe hospital, Manchester, in 1978 and 109 in the first three quarters of 1979; comparative figures for live births at Wythenshawe hospital during the same periods were 2,233 and 1,756 respectively.
