HC Deb 03 December 1979 vol 975 cc45-6W
Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) whether the Magnox nuclear power station in Scotland will still be in use in the year 2000;

(2) what calculations have been made of the cost per unit of electricity generated by the existing advanced gas-cooled reactor stations in Scotland.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

I am asking the chairman of the South of Scotland Electricity Board to write to the hon. Member.

Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how much additional installed nuclear electricity generating capacity in Scotland came on stream in each year from 1969 to 1979; and how much is estimated to come on stream from 1980 to 1990.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The first advanced gas cooled reactor—AGR—unit at Hunterston B entered service in 1976 and currently has an output rating of 500MW. A second similar unit started up in 1977 but has been under repair since the sea water ingress in October of that year. The first AGR unit at Torness, with a nominal output rating of 630MW, is planned to enter service in 1986–87, with a second similar unit following a year later.
