HC Deb 03 December 1979 vol 975 cc67-8W
Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if there is any existing statutory liability for maintenance on relatives already resident of people admitted for settlement.

Mrs. Chalker

For supplementary benefit purposes, which I assume the hon. Member has in mind, husband and wife are liable for the maintenance of each other and parents are liable for the main- tenance of their children under the age of 16. These liabilities apply to people already resident in respect of relatives admitted for settlement in the same way as they apply to relatives already resident. There is no existing liability for other relatives who are admitted for settlement as dependants of residents in the United Kingdom.
