HC Deb 03 December 1979 vol 975 cc19-20W
Mr. Roper

asked the Lord Privy Seal what would be the cost to the United Kingdom if it were to join the resettlement fund of the Council of Europe.

Sir Ian Gilmour

As one of the principal contributors to the Council of Europe, the United Kingdom would be expected to subscribe to the resettlement fund US$1.84 million (£858,000) and to pay part of the administration costs of the partial agreement on the resettlement fund. In 1980 the contributions of France, the Federal Republic of Germany and Italy towards the administration costs will be Ff243,692.37 each (£27,000).

Additionally, the United Kingdom would be invited to join the majority of participating States in pledging, though not actually paying, a further amount equivalent to the original subscription.

Mr. Roper

asked the Lord Privy Seal whether consideration will be given to the United Kingdom joining the resettlement fund of the Council of Europe in view of the possible increase in the scope of its activities; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Ian Gilmour

Careful consideration has been given to the United Kingdom joining the resettlement fund of the Council in Europe. But the Government have decided against joining the fund for the time being.
