HC Deb 03 December 1979 vol 975 cc56-7W
Mr. Robert Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will display in all the offices of the Supplementary Benefits Commission particulars of the conviction of, and sentences imposed upon, Mrs. Norman Cullen and Mrs. Grace Robinson at Huddersfield Crown Court for having obtained social security benefits to which they were not entitled; and if he will arrange to have the notices displayed in English and also in the principal languages of the immigrant communities.

Mr. Prentice

No. Although the use of posters which refer to specific cases has some attraction there are many practical objections. Instead, we are arranging for a more general warning poster, reminding claimants of the need to declare any work or relevant change of circumstances, to be displayed in social security and unemployment benefit offices. This is in addition to the specific warnings on claim forms and in each order payment book. More generally, my right hon. Friend and I have emphasised our determination to implement the election pledge to act more vigorously against fraud and abuse, and we shall continue to do so.
