HC Deb 04 April 1979 vol 965 cc942-5W
Mr. Peter Morrison

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many unfilled vacancies were notified in employment and careers offices in February 1974, October 1974 and in the last month for which figures are available.

Mr. Golding

Following is the information for Great Britain:

At employment offices At careers offices
February 1974 266,782 84,847
October 1974 299,056 76,463
March 1979 224,983 27,473

The statistics relate only to vacancies notified to employment offices and careers offices; vacancies notified to employment offices are estimated to be about one-third of all vacancies in the country as a whole. Because of possible duplication the two series should not be added together.

Mr. Peter Morrison

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people were registered as unemployed in the Chester travel-to-work area in February 1964, October 1974 and in the last month for which figures are available.

Mr. Golding

Following is the information for the Chester employment office area:

February 1964 567
October 1974 1,566
March 1979 3,274

The figures are not seasonally adjusted.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the mid-1974 figure and what is the latest estimate of unemployment in each employment office district in London; and what percentage of the employable population in each district this represents.

Mr. Golding
