asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have undertaken any survey of non-subsidised firms, or firms receiving subsidies other than the temporary employment subsidy, to discover the effects of employment subsidies on the sales and employment of their non-subsidised competitors, and what they estimate the effects to be.

Lord WALLACE of COSLANY

Research has been commissioned from the Department of Applied Economics, Cambridge, which will include a small-scale survey of non-subsidised firms which might have been affected by the temporary employment subsidy. Results will not be available until later this year.

What would he the estimated average duration of unemployment among employees covered by the temporary employment subsidy for the duration of that subsidy, were they not so covered.

I regret that the information is not available. and loan repayments, for each year since 1970.

The information is as follows:

On average, jobs are supported by the temporary employment subsidy for between 8 and 9 months. However it is not possible to estimate what would have been the average duration of unemployment if employees had not been supported by the subsidy.
