The figures for England North-East include Grimsby and Hull, those for Eng-

warning systems concerning flooding of the River Brent, Middlesex, with particular reference to the role of the British Waterways Board; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Silkin

I have been asked to reply.

Flood warning systems on the River Brent and other non-tidal rivers in the London excluded area are the responsibility of the Greater London Council as land drainage authority. I understand that improvements in the arrangements for issuing and transmitting flood warnings in the Brent catchment have been implemented by the council in consultation with the other authorities concerned, including the British Waterways Board as operators of the Brent reservoir. My Department has also approved an application by the council for grant aid on expenditure on local alarm equipment.
