38. Mr. John Hunt

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will issue a general direction to the British Railways Board that there must be no further increase in the level of passenger railway fares until at least 12 months have elapsed since the date of the last increase.

No approach has been made to me by the BRB with a view to a fare increase earlier than January 1980. I am sure that it would be damaging to the railways were there to be such an increase later this year, but I have no power to direct the board to maintain 12 months between increases.
