HC Deb 04 April 1979 vol 965 c745W
Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Trade how many jobs have been saved in the West Riding textile industry as a result of the terms achieved during the renegotiation of the multi-fibre arrangement.

Mr. Meacher

There are a number of restrictions on imports of clothing which have helped maintain the market for textiles produced in the West Riding. There is a quota on Argentinian wool and worsted fabrics, and the EEC Commission is negotiating the introduction of restrictions on the import of wool tops from a number of South American countries. In general, however, it is not possible to isolate the effects of the multi-fibre arrangement from other factors affecting employment.
