Mr. Townsend

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what was the increase in industrial output between the years 1973 and 1978 in the following countries, arranged in descending orders of magnitude: the United States of America, Canada, Italy, France, Japan, West Germany and the United Kingdom.

Mr. Denzil Davies,

pursuant to the reply [Official Report, 3 April 1979; Vol. 964, c. 621], gave the following answer:

Industrial output data for France are not yet available for 1978; the information requested for the remaining countries is shown in the table below.

base period has been taken as the fourth quarter of 1974 for these series. Since the current balance of payments on non-oil account cannot meaningfully be expressed in index number form, figures in £ million have been included in the table. For import penetration, the percentage which imports of manufactured goods represent in total home demand for these goods over the 12 month periods ending in December 1974 and September 1978 are given.

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what was the average annual increase in output per person employed between the years 1973 and 1978 in (a) the whole United Kingdom economy and (b) manufacturing industries in the United Kingdom.

pursuant to the reply [Official Report, 3 April 1979; Vol. 964, c. 621], gave the following answer:

The number of persons in employment in the whole United Kingdom economy is not yet available for 1978. The average annual increases that can be calculated from such information as is available are shown below:

Such comparable information as is readily available for the countries listed relates to years up to 1976. Comparisons of the growth, between 1973 and 1976, in the volume of manufacturing output per employee were given in my answer to the hon. Member for Chingford (Mr. Tebbit) on 18 January 1979 [Official Report, Vol. 960, c. 872.]
