HL Deb 04 April 1979 vol 399 cc1973-4WA
Lord HYLTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will harmonise the provisions of the Prevention of Terror- ism (Temporary Provisions) Act 1976 and the Northern Ireland (Emergency Provisions) Act 1978, so that both in Great Britain and in Northern Ireland suspects may only be held without charge for more than 48 hours on the authorisation of the Secretary of State.

Lord BOSTON of FAVERSHAM

The relevant powers under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act 1976 apply throughout the United Kingdom. The powers available under the Northern Ireland (Emergency Provisions) Act 1978 fall to be renewed by Parliament every six months; their necessity is thoroughly examined in that context.
