HC Deb 04 April 1979 vol 965 cc881-2W
Mr. Fairbairn

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what was

mandy; and what measures have been taken to control imports of carcass meat from Continental European Community countries in general and from France, in particular.

Mr. Strang

Between 21 March and 2 April there have been 18 reported cases of foot-and-mouth disease in the Departments of Calvados and Manche resulting in the slaughter of over 1,000 cattle and over 500 pigs. Movement restrictions have been imposed over an area stretching from Bayeux through St. Lo to the outskirts of Cherbourg. A careful watch is being kept on developments. Staff have been alerted along the South Coast of England and appropriate precautions are being taken. An import of breeding livestock from Normandy has been refused but meat imports are continuing for the present under the strict veterinary precautions set out in the EEC directive. The French authorities have suspended slaughterings in the two export slaughterhouses in the infected area.
