HC Deb 03 April 1979 vol 965 cc631-2W
Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland why Her Majesty's Government did not take action, directly or through the district council, to ensure that the Terence Memorial Hall, Crawfordsburn, County Down, which was built for the people of the area, was preserved for the community.

Mr. Carter

It is the statutory responsibility of district councils in Northern Ireland to provide adequate facilities for recreational, social, physical and cultural activities in their respective areas. I understand that the North Down borough council tried to buy the memorial hall at the valuation price determined by the district valuer but was unsuccessful.

I understand that the borough council is now considering how best it might provide for the needs of the village.
