HC Deb 03 April 1979 vol 965 cc556-7W
Mr. George

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of police in (a) Walsall, (b) the West Midlands police area and (c) England and Wales as at April 1974; what are the most recent comparable figures available; and if he will express these figures as a percentage of the full complement.

Dr. Summerskill

The figures are as follows:

ently in Great Britain after the period of their work permit had expired since 1945.

Mr. John

Information is not available in the form requested. The total numbers of men, women and children accepted for settlement in the United Kingdom on removal of time limit since 1970 were published in table 8 of "Control of Immigation: Statistics 1977" Cmnd. 7160. However, these statistics cannot be subdivided according to the category under which such people were allowed to enter the United Kingdom.

The numbers accepted since 1973 on completion of four years' approved employment were published in table 10 of Cmnd. 7160 and for 1978 in a Home Office statistical bulletin—issue 2/79—on 26 March 1979. Prior to 1973 the available statistics relate to the numbers of Commonwealth employment voucher holders and foreign workers admitted to the United Kingdom from 1962 to 1972, which were published annually in "Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1962 and 1968—Control of Immigration Statistics" and "Statistics of Foreigners entering and leaving the United Kingdom".
