HC Deb 03 April 1979 vol 965 cc554-5W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Newham, North-West on 21 March, why he will not seek to amend the Police Act to provide that no policeman should be permitted to make or issue any public statement unless it is attributed to a named police officer.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

I consider legislation unnecessary and inappropriate to deal with a matter which should remain within the discretion of the chief officer of police of the force concerned.
