HC Deb 03 April 1979 vol 965 cc658-9W
Mr. Younger

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if, pursuant to his answer of 22nd February 1978, Official Report, c. 687, he will give the total expenditure on the Scottish National Health Service in each of the years 1970–71 to 1978–79; and, taking 1970 as 100, what has been the real increase in each subsequent year.

Mr. Harry Ewing

The information based on 1970 as 100 is not readily available. However, the up-dated version of the earlier answer is:

£ Real increase
1971–72 256.0 100.0
1972–73 296 .6 105.7
1973–74 333.0 109.7
1974–75 446.4 110.1
1975–76 590.1 114.4
1976–77 666.5 113.4
1977–78 755.9 114.9
1978–79 871.6 119.8

Expenditure is defined consistently with the usage in public expenditure surveys and is net of patients' charges. The figures in column 1 are at outtum prices—that for 1978–79 is an estimate. The index is at 1977 survey prices.
