HC Deb 03 April 1979 vol 965 cc613-4W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many microprocessors are currently being used in motor vehicles manufactured in the following countries: the United Kingdom, the Federal Republic of Germany, France and the United States of America.

Mr. Les Huckfield

In the United Kingdom microprocessors are used only in one luxury model. I am not aware of any figures on the number of microprocessors being used in motor vehicles manufactured in other countries, but it is known that the United States has a lead.

Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Industry to what extent microprocessors have been used to effect fuel conservation in, and the avoidance of pollution from, motor vehicles.

Mr. Les Huckfield

The major automotive manufacturers in the United States, Western Europe and Japan are actively pursuing the development of economic and reliable microprocessor engine control systems.
