HC Deb 03 April 1979 vol 965 c558W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Lord President of the Council (1) on how many occasions in the past year telephones in hon. Members' offices have been reported out of use; and if he is aware that the breakdowns in the 746 type telephones provided stem from a minor technical fault arising from their design;

(2) if he will take steps to prevent the plungers in type 746 telephones in hon. Members' offices from separating themselves from the housing on the switch hook arms.

Mr. Foot

Over the whole telephone system of the Palace of Westminster, which includes the out-buildings, some 3,300 reports were received of telephone faults over the past year. To determine the number of faults which were reported from hon. Members' rooms would require a disproportionate amount of time and cost.

I have asked the Serjeant at Arms to take up the hon. Member's point concerning the technical operation of the 746 type of telephone with the Post Office.
