Mr. Litterick

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what improvements in the provision of health care facilities have been made in the city of Birmingham since 1974.

Mr. Moyle

During the period of 1 April 1974 to 31 March 1978, £9,040,000 has been spent by the Birmingham area health authority (teaching) completing major projects. These included:

  • Selly Oak hospital—New ward block; 244 beds, ITU, HSSU, four theatres.
  • Birmingham general hospital—New ward block and accident department.
  • East Birmingham hospital—New ward block; 398 beds, ITU, three theatres.
  • Dudley Road hospital—Geriatric department; 176 beds and day hospital.
  • Highcroft hospital—84 beds—geriatric—and day unit.

New health centres have opened at Stetchford, Bartley Green, Woodgate Valley and Landsowne Street.

In addition, a number of minor projects, such as the upgrading of wards, have been undertaken to improve the quality of services to patients.
