asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he is taking to ensure that there are sufficient places in community homes so as to ensure that schoolchildren are not remanded to prisons and remand centres.

In a 1977 circular I asked children's regional planning committees to review the adequacy of existing provision for this purpose when revising their plans. Revised plans, covering a five-year period from this year, are now coming in. Meanwhile my Department continues to make capital grants to local authorities for the provision of secure accommodation.
