Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how much money is available for grants and interest-free loans to voluntary clubs within the area administered by the Eastern Sports Council; and if he will list the amounts per county for each of the last two years.

Mr. Denis Howell

In each of the past two years the amounts available within the area administered by the Eastern region of the Sports Council have been:

For grants to voluntary clubs £120,000
For interest-free loans £12,000

I regret that figures are not available showing the breakdown of these amounts by counties within the area.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list in the Official Report the voluntary clubs in Cambridgeshire to which grants and interest-free loans were made over the last two years.

A total of 15 voluntary clubs in Cambridgeshire have received financial assistance from the Sports Council over the past two years. Grant totals amounted to £40,165, those of interest-free loans to £10,036. Those clubs to have benefited are:

  • Girton golf club—part grant, part loan.
  • Ely bowls club—part grant, part loan.
  • Bassingbourne ski club—grant.
  • Cambridge rowing club—grant.
  • Eynesbury Rovers F.C.—grant.
  • St. Neots table tennis club—grant.
  • Newmarket sub-aqua club-grant.
  • Cambridge University gliding club—part grant, part loan—this club is not restricted to University students.
  • Peterborough motor club—loan.
  • Peterborough rowing club—grant.
  • Peterborough sports club—grant—a multi-sports centre.
  • Cam sailing club—loan.
  • Whittlesey Rotary club—part grant, part loan.
  • Peterborough lawn tennis club—grant.
