HC Deb 02 April 1979 vol 965 cc546-7W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many vehicle records have been destroyed at the Vehicle and Driver Licensing Centre.

Mr. Horam

In agreement with the Home Office and the Association of Chief Police Officers approximately 14 million of the former local taxation office vehicle records have been destroyed. Of these, some 2½ million, relating to vehicles which had neither been converted to the centralised system nor licensed since December 1976, were destroyed by taxation offices before they closed on 31 March 1978. The other 11½ million were records progressively transferred after 1971 from taxation offices to a central repository when the vehicle concerned had remained unlicensed for at least three years. Their destruction was completed in September 1978. The destruction of a further 15 million old records, of which 13½ million relate to vehicles which are now on the central register, is due to begin on 2 April. The police have been kept fully informed of the Department's plans.
