Mr. Younger

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the average total level of unemployment in Scotland between the months of June 1970 and February 1974, inclusive, and the average level from March 1974 to the latest available date.

Mr. Gregor MacKenzie

Between June 1970 and February 1974, inclusive, average total unemployment in Scotland was 113,500 and between March 1974 and March 1979 inclusive it was 149,000 per month.

Mr. Younger

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if, pursuant to his answer of 24 July 1978, Official Report, column 590, he will give the Scottish unemployment relative for each of the past 12 months.

The Scottish unemployment relative is measured by expressing the rate of seasonally adjusted unemployment in Scotland—excluding school leavers—as a percentage of the corresponding United Kingdom rate. Over the past 12 months the relative has been:
