asked the Secretary of State for Transport what was the percentage increase in rail fares in each of the following years: 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978 and to date in 1979.

British Rail's passenger fares increased in cash terms by an average of 50.9 per cent. in 1975, when fares caught up with the rising costs of previous years, 12.2 per cent. in 1976, 12.5 per cent. in 1977, 14.5 per cent. in 1978 and 9.4 per cent. in 1979.
