HC Deb 02 April 1979 vol 965 c520W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Employment why he has never visited areas with large immigrant populations to discuss matters connected with employment and unemployment; why he has not visited the London borough of Newham; why he has declined to make such visits for the future; and whether he will change his decision so far as the future is concerned.

Mr. John Grant

My right hon. Friend's visits within the United Kingdom often include areas with large immigrant populations and provide an opportunity to discuss matters relating to employment and unemployment which are of local concern. However, visits for the specific purpose of dealing with racial matters connected with employment and unemployment are normally carried out by me, as the Minister with special responsibility for race relations in employment, and I report as necessary to the Secretary of State on these matters. Neither my right hon. Friend nor I can hope to visit all those areas which are of special concern to Members of the House, but we shall of course keep my hon. Friend's interests in mind when future visits by Ministers are under consideration.
