HC Deb 02 April 1979 vol 965 cc447-8W
Mr. Alan Lee Williams

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has reached a decision on the future of vehicle excise duty on electric vehicles.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

Yes. I have decided that vehicle excise duty on electric vehicles should be abolished along with that on petrol-driven vehicles. There is a strong case, on energy policy and environmental grounds, for encouraging the development of this industry. The cost to the revenue will be less than £2 million per year. Detailed proposals for implementation will be announced in due course.
