HC Deb 02 April 1979 vol 965 c523W
Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether, in view of the fact that in the last fortnight two men have been killed in separate silo accidents, he has considered the introduction of compulsory safety standards for bulk storage silos.

Mr. John Grant

I am informed by the chairman of the Health and Safety Commission that he has no plans to introduce specific safety legislation for bulk storage silos.

The general duties sections of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 place an obligation on the employer and the self-employed to provide safe systems of work for employees. Similarly, these sections oblige employees to take reasonable care of the health and safety of themselves and of others who may be affected by their work activities.
