HC Deb 24 October 1978 vol 955 cc757-8W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how much wine was grown in England in each of the past five years by volume and by value; and what estimates he has made of the consequent savings of wine imports.

Mr. Strang

Because of the very small scale of production, detailed information about quantities and value of wine of fresh grapes produced within the United Kingdom is not collected and the data necessary for estimating the effect of production on imports of wine is not available.

The quantities on which excise duty has been paid on delivery for home consumption are:

  • 1976 (February-December)—23,000 gallons.
  • 1977—42,000 gallons.

Separate statistics for wine of fresh grapes were not collected before February 1976.
