HC Deb 24 October 1978 vol 955 c796W
Mr. Grieve

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what proposals he has for taking action in relation to the dangerous practice of van drivers of leaving the sliding doors of their vans open to the danger not only of the drivers of such vans themselves but of other users of the roads.

Mr. Horam

The Department's Driving Manual, entitled "Driving" and published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office, emphasises the importance of all doors being properly closed before a vehicle is driven. The practice of leaving sliding doors open is wrong because it increases the vulnerability of those inside in an accident, especially if they are not wearing seat belts. We are not, however, convinced that the hazards involved are such as to warrant further action by the Department.
