HC Deb 24 October 1978 vol 955 cc779-80W
Mr. Kershaw

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what steps he is taking within NATO to ensure that Turkey has an adequate supply of modern weapons at her disposal, in view of Turkey's importance as a NATO ally.

Mr. Mulley

While it is of course for individual member countries of NATO to equip their forces, the Allies have recognised the special difficulties of some members. At our meeting in May, NATO Defence Ministers agreed upon the need for Turkey to receive some external assistance for the support and modernisation of her forces. The United Kingdom is taking a full part in the discussions within NATO to determine how best this can be done.
