HC Deb 24 October 1978 vol 955 c836W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will now issue a general direction to the National Coal Board and introduce the necessary legislation to obviate the present requirement of a medical examination for young employees, in the light of the fact that out of 7,305 examinations only five teenagers were rejected as unfit.

Mr. Golding

No. I am informed by the Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission that, as suggested in the Commission publication "Occupational Health Services: The way ahead", the Commission's Medical Advisory Committee has on its programme of work a review of all routine medical examinations currently required by statute for health and safety purposes. We are awaiting the outcome of that review.
