HC Deb 24 October 1978 vol 955 c849W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will place in the Library the results of the study by the Medical Research Council of anti-hypertensive drug therapy and, in particular, the findings on the long-term benefits of the drugs currently being prescribed within the National Health Service.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

The results of this large-scale controlled trial, which is designed to find out whether treating mild to moderate hypertension is effective in reducing strokes or coronary attacks, will not be known for several years. Before the trial began, a pilot study was carried out to confirm its administrative, scientifice and ethical feasibility. The results of this study were reported in theBritish Medical Journal of 4th June 1977. Copies are available in the Library.
