§ 13. Mr, Ronald Atkinsasked the Secretary of State for Trade what are the latest figures of imports in 1978, of private cars and commercial vehicles, respectively, manufactured in Japan.
§ Mr. Meacher:According to the Overseas Trade Statistics, in the first nine months of 1978, we imported from Japan 143,000 passenger motor cars, including some light commercial vehicles, to the value of £253 million; and 7,750 motor vehicles for the transport of goods or materials, to the value of £14 million.
§ 35. Mr. Hal Millerasked the Secretary of State for Trade what discussions have been held in the past six months with the Japanese Government concerning the export of Japanese cars and commercial vehicles to the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. Meacher:We recently drew the Japanese Government's attention to the growing share of the British market taken by Japanese cars, and they explained that they would strengthen their administrative guidance with the intention of ensuring that their March statement would be fulfilled.
§ 39. Mr. Thorneasked the Secretary of State for Trade whether he is satisfied with the present regulations to control the entry of Japanese trucks into the United Kingdom.

§ Mr. Meacher:I have no reason as yet to believe that the Japanese Government's statement about shipments of heavy commercial vehicles to the United Kingdom in 1978 will not be fulfilled.
