HC Deb 27 November 1978 vol 959 c8W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many additional television transmitters it is estimated will be necessary to provide the fourth television channel in Wales; and how many of these transmitters can be located on existing masts.

Dr. Summerskill:

An additional transmitter and allied equipment would be need at each of the six main and 71 relay stations dependent on them which currently provide the three existing television services, at ultra high frequency—UHF —in 625-line definition and in colour, to some 93 per cent. of the population in Wales. The broadcasting authorities' joint engineering programme for the continued extension of the UHF coverage of the existing services is expected to increase the percentage population coverage to about 96 per cent. by 1982 and envisages the provision of a further 65 or so transmitters, for each of which an additional —fourth—transmitter and allied equipment would also be required.
