asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many vacancies there are in the medical staff at the Royal Victoria Hospital and in what grades and disciplines they occur; and what were the same figures two years and five years ago.

Mr. Carter

There were 21 vacant medical posts in the following grades and specialties at 1st November 1978Consultant posts in anaesthetics, epidemiology, radiology (2), rheumatology and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery and in venerology. Joint appointment consultant posts of lectureships in clinical pharmacology, human genetics, neurosurgery, ophthalmic surgery and in pathology (morbid anatomy), and the chair in orthopaedic surgery and in otorhinolaryngology. Senior registrar post in haematology and senior registrar senior tutor posts in pathology (2). Senior house officer posts in ENT surgery (2) and clinical pathology (2). There were 23 vacant posts at 1st November 1976 as follows: Consultant posts in anaesthetics, orthopaedic surgery, radiology (2), thoracic surgery, epidemiology and in the lectureship in human genetics. Senior registrar posts in geriatrics and in radiology (2) and senior registrar/registrar posts in histopathology, chemical pathology and medical microbiology. Registrar posts in radiology (5). Senior house officers posts in ENT surgery, anaesthetics (2) and histopathology (2).
