§ Mrs. Bainasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list in the Official Report the number of deaths from mesothelioma in (a) naval dockyard workers and (b) other workers in Scotland since 1st January 1976 to the latest available date; how many of these deaths were possibly related to asbestos exposure: and how many were the subject of public inquiries under the Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths Inquiry (Scotland) Act 1976.
§ Mr. Harry EwingIn the period 1st January 1976 to 30th June 1978, 59 deaths were registered and classified as due to mesothelioma. In one of these 625W cases the occupation was stated to have been connected with naval dockyards; in 57 cases some other occupation was stated and in one case no occupation was given. In one of the 57 cases asbestosis was mentioned on the medical certificate as a contributory cause of death. Deaths from mesothelioma would not normally be the subject of a public inquiry under the Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths Inquiry (Scotland) Act 1976.
