Mr. George Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what was the average cost of each fatal accident on the roads in the last 12-month period available;

(2) what was the gross cost of accidents on the roads in the last 12-month period available.

Mr. McElhone

The costs of road accidents are calculated as average figures based on a number of factors, including loss of earnings and costs to the health service.

On this basis the average cost of a fatal road accident in 1977 is put at £64,000, and the average for injury accidents at £4,890.

There were 21,678 injury accidents of all categories in Scotland in 1977; their estimated gross cost is £106,005,420.
